(WOMAN onstage in chair with small typewriter -- snatches paper out of roller, crumbles it, and inserts a new sheet of paper -- frustrated, ready to give up)
WOMAN:
WONderful. How in the world are you supposed to illuminate Proverbs 3:5-6? It's impossible. This is my third week, and NOTHING . . . I'm just going to have to call the pastor and tell him I can't do this.
(types for a while, stops, picks up the Bible and reads Proverbs 3:5-6 out loud)
How in the WORLD do you trust in the Lord with all your heart? (goes back to typing)
MAN:
(entering) Hey sweetheart! You ready to head over to the gym?
WOMAN:
Does it LOOK like I'm ready for the gym? Guess I could use this as my dumbbell! (lifts the typewriter and presses it like barbells)
MAN:
Great! This is the third week you've pulled this excuse. Now either write the skit, or don't write it, but don't sit there every day pretending to write it.
WOMAN:
I'm NOT pretending to write it. I just can't think how to illustrate this verse.
MAN:
You mean "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and don't lean on your own understanding?"
WOMAN:
That would be the one.
MAN:
Can't say I'd know how to illustrate that.
WOMAN:
Now you're getting the point.
MAN:
How about a couple driving at night and they're lost and it seems like they should turn this way or that way, and she keeps telling him to stop and ask for directions but he won't, and they keep going around in circles --
WOMAN:
-- Oh no, no -- nothing like that. It's supposed to be realistic. (sarcasm) Something people can identify with. Something an auto-mechanic or a lawyer or a secretary or a nurse or a professional bobsledder can relate to -- and how I'm supposed to accomplish THAT I'll never figure out.
MAN:
I'd say, just stick to the formula that has always worked: YOU understand it, and it is scriptural. The Holy Spirit has always lead you to writing what is best, not your own understanding. But take a break from it -- let's head over to the gym, and you can let your subconscious work on it...
WOMAN:
No way -- I've got to stick to this and get it going. Otherwise it'll never be done.
MAN:
(leaving) Okay, I've got a few things to do around the house. I'll check back with you in a bit. If you're not ready, I'll head over to the gym by myself.
WOMAN:
God will direct you. Put the Lord first. In everything. Trust. Not my own understanding.
MAN:
(calling from other part of "house") Sweetheart! Have you tried it yourself?
WOMAN:
(calling back) I can't hear you!
MAN:
I said: Have you tried it yourself?!
WOMAN:
Tried WHAT?!
MAN:
Like it says in the Bible: Trusting in God, not in yourself, so He can lead you!
WOMAN:
(thoughtfully) But how? That's what I need to know. I'm not sure HOW.
MAN:
Have you tried praying about it?
WOMAN:
(shocked expression, slapping forehead) I haven't even prayed about it!
MAN:
(still shouting) I said: Have you tried praying about it?
WOMAN:
Hold on! Wait a second! (closing her eyes)
Dear Heavenly Father. I don't know how I expected to trust in you with my whole heart, when I haven't even talked to you about this. But I know you care, Father, and I thank you for your promise that if I lack for wisdom, you will give me wisdom, generously. Well, I need that wisdom, Lord. Please give me understanding. And as you said in the verse I'm trying to illuminate -- that you will direct my life -- that's what I'm asking for, Lord. Please direct my life. I trust in you, Lord. And I thank you for answering me, Heavenly Father. I thank you for giving me the necessary wisdom. In the name of Jesus, I pray, AMEN.
MAN:
(entering) I said: Have you tried praying about it? Oops, sorry. Didn't know you decided to take a nap!
WOMAN:
(opening eyes, smiling) Yes, I did pray about it. And God answered!
MAN:
He answered? You sure? So you know how to illuminate that verse?
WOMAN:
Yep! You and me, right now, discussing the verse. That's it! I'm a perfect example. See, I kept trying to figure it out with my own understanding! But as soon as I released it to God, talked to Him about it and trusted in Him, it was so beautifully clear! He gave me the wisdom, immediately. (excited) Trust in Him, not in me! That's EXACTLY what I'm going to be writing about!
MAN:
Let me get this straight. You couldn't think of a way to illuminate the scripture, because you were trying to figure it out, and then you prayed to God, asked Him about it, and now you've figured it out -- that what you've been going through these last weeks is the answer?
WOMAN:
Yes, isn't it great? It's like a miracle! I just experienced a miracle -- God leading in my life, just like in the scripture, because I trusted in Him, with my whole heart. Just like my eyesight, God is leading me; or my hearing -- I just experienced God, just as real as any of my five senses! GOD LEADING ME!
MAN:
Well, okay. So your dramatic parable, illuminating the scripture, is going to be ABOUT writing the dramatic parable. Kind of art reflecting life reflecting art -- Man! It kind of sounds like a Seinfeld episode.
WOMAN:
But not just writing the dramatic parable. The whole process. Struggling so hard, trying to do it on my own. And it's hopeless. And then, in a moment -- trusting in God with my whole heart -- He solves my problem, as simple as that! (snaps fingers)
MAN:
Sounds GREAT. Well, I guess I better leave you alone to write --
WOMAN:
(getting up, all excited) Nope! The hard part is done! Writing it is going to be soooooo easy! Just scribbling -- scribbling and bibbling! The important part is up here -- (tapping forehead) -- in my noodle! Let's go to the gym, I can use the exercise after all these weeks of stiffness!
(exiting) Ooooooh! I'm so excited!!!
