SKIT #1:
Water Moccasins
BIBLE POINT:
The Bible shows us the way to trust. Keep your eyes on Jesus, not on your troubles, or upon yourself.
DRAMA NEEDS:
5 actors. No props. (could be shortened to only 1 or 2 snakes)
(a boy faces a minefield of deadly serpents, as he thinks of each new trouble, a “serpent” slithers into his path — only his friend, a girl, standing on the opposite side of the minefield, can help him through his troubles — when he trusts in her, his progress is good, but when he concentrates on the dangers, or begins to admire his own progress, he fails)
BOY:
(alone on left side of stage, deep in thought, pacing, rubbing his forehead, posture slouched) Oh GREAT! What am I going to do? What am I going to do?
SERPENT #1:
(slithers out from right side of stage, coils and wriggles into center stage, constantly pokes its tongue out, it is hungry, and its beady eyes focus upon the Boy) HHHHHIIIIIIISSSSSsssss!
BOY:
Oh man! What am I going to do? (staring at Serpent #1) The teacher said I’m going to be failing history! My Dad is going to go BALLISTIC!
SERPENT #1:
(gets very aggressive, acts like it is going to rush forward and strike at the Boy) HHHiiiiissss!
HHHHHHIIIIIIIiiiiiisssssss!
GIRL:
(enters and stands at right side of stage, is very calm, very confident, stands tall and strong)
Don’t be afraid. Just listen to me. I will tell you how to get across.
BOY:
But that stinking SNAKE! It’s going to BITE ME!
SERPENT #1:
(wriggles and writhes aggressively) HHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIssssss!
GIRL:
(calmly) Just don’t worry about the snake. I won’t let it hurt you. Come across! NOW!
BOY:
(hesitates) Well, uh, okay. (looks at snake, pauses, looks at girl, swallows HARD, takes one little baby step forward) If you say so.
SERPENT #1:
(hisses softly, then turns away from Boy, slithers deeper on stage, away from audience, is visibly less a threat to the Boy) hhhhhhiiiiissssssss (wriggles and slithers, is still very dangerous, but the snake is not looking at the boy, is obviously not so scary anymore)
BOY:
(is reassured, smiles a little bit) Hey! You know, this isn’t so bad. My teacher DID tell me that if I did some extra credit, and did okay on the test next week, I’d get a pretty good grade. (takes another small step, smiles a little more)
GIRL:
Yes! That’s right, come across to me! (she’s happy, this kid is making some progress!)
SERPENT #2:
(writhes and wriggles out from left of stage and slithers close to the Boy who sees the beast and is terrified — Serpent #2 goes to center of stage and looks viciously at Boy, blocking his path) HHHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! (it repeatedly pokes its tongue at him)
BOY:
The kids at school keep making fun of me! Hardly anybody likes me!
SERPENT #1:
(slithers back and joins Serpent #2, and they writhe and wriggle together, blocking the boy)
GIRL:
(frustrated and worried about Boy) Just come across! I’ll protect you! Everything will be okay! Don’t doubt, okay? Come across! Now! Come across!
BOY:
(takes a step forward, but is clearly terrified — both Serpents slither to back of stage and ignore the Boy) Whew! The snakes went back! Hey, who cares what those kids think of me! (takes another tentative step, and another, gaining confidence)
GIRL:
(smiling big) You’re doing GREAT! Hurry, come across!
BOY:
Hey, don’t worry! I’ll get there! I’ll get there! Yeah, who CARES about that stinking history test, and who CARES about those stupid kids? I’m cool! I’m not even afraid of snakes! Yeah, WHO’S the COOLEST? ME! I’M NOT AFRAID OF ANYTHING!
GIRL:
(puts hands over face, shaking head) No! Oh NO! Please come across. Please keep looking AT ME!
BOY:
(new confidence, acting very cool) Hey! Don’t get excited! I’ll get there! Look at me! I’m the coolest!
SERPENT #3:
(comes slithering out very fast and circles the Boy — he sees it and is terrified) HIIIIIIIIISSSSSSSSSSS! (comes and puts arms around Boy, squeezes him)
BOY:
Oh NO! Another snake! HELP! It’s SQUEEZING ME! Please help me!
GIRL:
LOOK AT ME! HEY! LOOK AT ME!
BOY:
(won’t look at Girl, struggles with Serpent #3, and Serpents #1 & #2 slither back and circle the Boy and Serpent #3 — Serpent #3 squeezes even harder) Help me! I can’t breathe! I’m going to DIE! HELP ME!
GIRL:
(shouting) LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT ME AND TRUST ME!
BOY:
(finally looks up at Girl — Serpent #3 lets go and slithers back, Serpents #1 & #2 slither away, all snakes writhe to back of stage, again ignoring the boy) Whew! I can breathe. They’re all gone!
GIRL:
(no longer yelling, but very eager) COME ACROSS NOW! You’re safe! Trust me!
BOY:
(peeks at snakes, but immediately looks again at Girl, swallows hard) Okay, here goes nothing! (runs across to Girl who catches him by shoulders)
GIRL:
YOU MADE IT! (she laughs and they both jump up and down happily)
BOY:
(looks back at snakes) Wow! I couldn’t of made it with out you!
GIRL:
(pats him on the back — points at her own eyes) Just keep looking at ME! Don’t look at the snakes. Don’t look at yourself. Okay?
BOY:
You got that right! But will there be (swallows hard) MORE snakes?
GIRL:
Oh, yes. There will always be snakes! But I’ll be with you. Don’t be afraid.
(they exit, walking confidently, back the way the boy passed, toward the left side of the stage, the Girl walking by the Boy’s side, they even pass by the snakes who writhe and wiggle away to opposite side of stage and exit stage right)
Explanation:
The Boy represents us, people, and the serpents represent our problems — troubles or bad things or bad people that plague our lives. The Girl represents Jesus. When we focus on our problems, or depend on ourselves, we become overwhelmed. But when we focus on Jesus, trust in Him, He helps us through our troubles. Just as Peter, when he was focused on Jesus, was able to walk upon the water, but when he turned to look back at his friends in the boat, he took his eyes off Jesus, and he began to sink in the water. But as bad as it might appear, Jesus was still there, with him, and lifted him up out of the water.
Small Aside — The Title:
“Water Moccasins” is a play on words. Peter walked upon the water by having faith in Jesus, so in a sense he wore “water shoes,” or “moccasins” (a "water moccasin" is also a kind of snake).
SKIT #2:
Highest Serving the Lowest
BIBLE POINT:
The Bible shows us the way to love. Be humble and serve others.
DRAMA NEEDS:
3 actors. Business suit & tie (or just a red tie), scrub brush, and bucket, bandanna (or hair scarf), an apron may be subsituted for the hair tie, or even some rough and filthy jacket.
(Principal of school paces, very concerned, lost in thought — wearing a business suit with a bright red “power tie”)
PRINCIPAL:
I can’t just EXPEL this student. What am I going to do? What am I going to do? I’m the Principal! I have to DO something.
VICE PRINCIPAL:
(entering) Sir? You have to hurry. The school board is going to convene soon to see to that matter of the student…
PRINCIPAL:
You mean to EXPEL my student?
VICE PRINCIPAL:
Not the best student, sir. Plus the work-study program just isn’t working, and this student just can’t afford our tuition anymore. Not enough money, sorry, it’s OUT THE DOOR!
PRINCIPAL:
But I love this student. This student is very special to me. I can’t lose this student.
VICE PRINCIPAL:
Sorry, sir. No earning your way through school!
(they exit stage)
STUDENT:
(enters, wears bandanna, exhausted, drops to floor and begins scrubbing) Kicked out of school! What am I going to do? (scrubs hard, throws self into work)
PRINCIPAL & VICE PRINCIPAL:
(enter and watch Student working, at a distance)
STUDENT:
(pauses in work to massage aching back) Oh boy! I need to get a break from all this work so I can STUDY. Oh why bother! I’m getting kicked out of school anyway!
PRINCIPAL:
(exasperated) I can’t put up with this anymore. I’m SAVING this student!
VICE PRINCIPAL:
Sir! But the School Board! (gestures off to the right of stage) They are watching!
PRINCIPAL:
(turns and faces right side of stage, addresses unseen audience, The School Board) I’m doing this for my student. I don’t want my student to miss any school.
VICE PRINCIPAL:
But what are you going to DO, Sir?
PRINCIPAL:
(taking off red tie, loosening, lifting over head — keeping loop in tie, so that it can be put back on and tightened, later) I am taking off my tie.
VICE PRINCIPAL:
But that’s your “Principal” tie!
PRINCIPAL:
That’s right. (walks to Student, takes scrub brush away, helps Student to stand, takes the bandanna off Student’s head, and puts bandanna on own head) And I will put on this bandanna!
VICE PRINCIPAL:
BUT YOU CAN’T DO THAT SIR! YOU’RE THE PRINCIPAL!
PRINCIPAL:
But I will become a Student. (gets down on floor and begins scrubbing)
STUDENT:
But why are you DOING this? I’m just a student! You’re the Principal!
PRINCIPAL:
This is how I give my love to you. And now you can stay in school.
STUDENT:
I’m not going to get kicked out?!
PRINCIPAL:
(scrubbing away) No. And you won’t have to earn your way through school either. It is a gift to you. Today I pay your whole tuition!
STUDENT:
Wow! This is great!
VICE PRINCIPAL:
I can’t believe you’re doing this! It really is GREAT.
PRINCIPAL:
(turns to unseen School Board) Do you see what I’m doing? (holds up scrub brush) I’m doing the work for this student.
STUDENT:
But how can I ever thank you? What can I ever do?
PRINCIPAL:
(to Student) I want you to love your fellow students. As I have helped you, I want you to help them.
STUDENT:
I WILL! I WILL!
PRINCIPAL:
(stands, puts scrub brush in bucket, wipes off hands) It is finished. (removes bandanna and returns it to student, takes red “power tie” and puts it back over head, tightens loop)
Explanation:
The Principal represents Jesus, the Vice Principal represents the spiritual realm, the School Board represents the watching Universe, and the Student represents humanity. Jesus removed His robe — His heavenly garb — and put on the clothes of a servant, a towel — He took the form of humanity (John 13:4). Jesus serves mankind, doing the work for us, cleansing us with His blood (the red tie). After dying, cleansing humanity of sin, Jesus returned to the Father, putting off the garment of a servant and taking back His heavenly clothes. Then He asks us to serve each other as He served us. Our love is to be a reflection of His love.
Small Aside:
The Footwashing Service is very important because not only does it teach the humility of all believers, but it also fully tells the Gospel story.
Skit #3
The Incredible Power of Prayer
BIBLE POINT:
The Bible shows us the way to pray. And even at the worst times, we always have real help, close at hand.
DRAMA NEEDS:
3 actors. No props, unless to make the “angels” appear more angelic!
(2 Angels in background, side by side, 1 agonizing Student in foreground, seated in chair)
ANGEL #1:
This is the moment, my friend, the critical moment in the life of my dear charge.
ANGEL #2:
I came as quickly as possible. Has your fellow made progress?
ANGEL #1:
On the contrary, he has fallen back. This is the defining dark moment of his life.
ANGEL #2:
Today? Right now? But I had thought his darkest day was two weeks ago, when he was kicked out of class when they accused him of cheating on his test!
ANGEL #1:
Ahh, but that was a dark day for this honest young man. Ah, but today . . . today he has learned that his parents are filing for divorce.
ANGEL #2:
Poor boy, poor dear charge. Come, he needs our comfort!
ANGEL #1:
(holding Angel #2 back) No, not yet. In the next few moments we shall either be comforting him and mourning for him, or, through the power of the Holy Spirit, celebrating for him. He is thinking about running away from home, and terrible things will happen to him!
STUDENT:
(angrily, with building rage) God? Are you up there? Do you know what’s happening in my life?
Haven’t I worked hard, harder than anybody? Haven’t I been a good student? (shaking fist) I’VE WORKED HARD, AND I ONLY SEEM TO FAIL! It's not fair! It's not fair!
Is THIS what kind of God you are? I SEE who gets the rewards in life! The cheaters, the LAZY! And what about those that work hard! What about ME, God? What kind of world have you created! What kind of crazy world! (covering face with hands) What’s left for me to do?
ANGEL #2:
Let’s help him, friend! He’s thinking about terrible things!
ANGEL #1:
(restraining) Not yet . . . not yet. See, how the Holy Spirit contends with my charge. See how He embraces the poor boy. A moment. A moment, friend… Right now, others are praying for him. People who love him are even now praying for him.
ANGEL #2:
But we MUST do something!
ANGEL #1:
(moving to stand guard about the man) Vigilance, then! Come! We must thwart the enemy, and block him!
ANGEL #2:
He’s there — and there! (peering at the invisible enemy, taking up martial arts stance to defend the Student from the evil angels) Keep him back, friend, keep him back!
STUDENT:
(shaking his head, resigned) Heavenly Father? Will you help me? Can you give me strength to get by? (looking up, to God) I’m sorry, Lord, forgive me, forgive me and help me!
ANGEL #1:
(speaking over his shoulder to man) Yes, my friend, yes! Call on Him! Call on Him!
ANGEL #2:
(placing a hand on man’s shoulder) YES! He hears, and He answers!
STUDENT:
(surrendering) I’m ready to try Your way, God, not mine. If You’ll have me…
ANGEL #2:
He’ll have you, He’s been waiting for you all these years! (turning to put both hands on the student’s shoulders as Angel #1 does same)
STUDENT:
I need Your help, God, and I need You. I admit it, with my entire being, I NEED You, Heavenly Father, and I need Jesus!
ANGEL #1:
(both angels aiding man to stand) With God all things are possible, friend…
STUDENT:
(visibly at peace) Thank you Father, for this peace, thank You for Your love, and thank You Lord for helping me, for strengthening me. I need you God, and I thank You for being here for me, always…
ANGEL #2:
(as the angels aid the student to exit the room) His beautiful grace is sufficient for you, beloved.
ANGEL #1:
And in your weakness — thank God — He is made strong!
