(a group of employees huddle at the water cooler, terrified and upset)
FOREMAN:
Now stop panicking. Everything is under control. This strike isn’t going to last.
EMPLOYEE #1:
You ARE crazy.
EMPLOYEE #2:
Man, this company is going DOWN.
FOREMAN:
Now cut it out! There’s no reason to be talking like that. Remember: the VP is on our side. How in the world are we going to lose?
(they pace, worrying, ready to scram)
EMPLOYEE #1:
Yeah, but the union.
EMPLOYEE #2:
Man, this company is going DOWN!
FOREMAN:
Keep your voices down! Here comes the VP!
(they get real quiet, watching the VP approach — maybe there is hope, but as he comes closer they see how sad he is, and they get more and more afraid)
(the VP comes to the front, and begins loading papers into a briefcase — he sorts through some files, crumpling some pages, filing others, putting some away into his briefcase)
FOREMAN:
(approaching the VP) (coughs to get his attention) Um, Sir? Could I speak to you, Sir?
VICE PRESIDENT:
Of course.
FOREMAN:
Sir? Us — me and the rest of your employees here, um, we’d like to know, you know, what’s going on…? You know, with the Union and stuff…?
VICE PRESIDENT:
I’m sorry. But the time is here. The Board is about to kick me out of the Company.
EMPLOYEE #1:
No!
EMPLOYEE #2:
NO!
FOREMAN:
Please, Sir! That can’t be! We’re on your side, Sir! You can’t lose! This Company needs you! WE need you! (from the heart) WE BELIEVE IN YOU!
VICE PRESIDENT:
(looking down, sadly, slowly begins to file papers into his briefcase, after a few moments, speaks to the employees without looking at them) It’s true, you know, what you just said. You do believe in me. But even now, the security guards are getting together — the Union is sending them to take me into custody, to take me before the Board…
…all of you — my faithful employees — you are going to desert me. Not one of you will be with me at that Board meeting. And I am going to be out of the Company.
(glances at employees) I know you’re sad, right now. But don’t lose hope. Because the Company WILL go on, and you will not be alone. When I leave, the President is going to send you my friend and representative, the Manager, and he is going to help you, he is going to lead you — he will help you remember my Policy — the Policy of the President.
(to the employees) Gentlemen. Please have a seat. (they grab chairs and sit down)
(picks up phone) Sir? Hello Mr. President. (smiles) Hi Daddy. (listens) Yes, it is time. I must resign so that the Company may ultimately triumph. And Sir, I would like to make a recommendation on behalf of my faithful employees — these employees you gave me. You gave me their resumes, and they are dear to my heart . . . and this is how they will ultimately be promoted, by knowing me, and through me, You, Sir.
Sir, I’m not making this recommendation on behalf of the whole Company, but on behalf of these employees here . . . yes, (smiling) I know, Sir, you have all their full resumes.
THEY ARE YOUR EMPLOYEES SIR. Everything You have given me is yours. And everything You have is mine. And these employees are bright shining examples of Your policy, Sir.
Sir, I will no longer remain in the Company. Yes Sir, I’m going to be with You very soon. And while I was here I protected them, these employees of Our Policy — the only one who took his lunch early and skipped out on us, my secretary, We allowed this so that the Policy would be proof of Truth.
These employees I love, and You love, they have not joined the Union, and now the Company hates them. Even though they will remain here, faithful to me . . . they are no longer truly a part of the Company, any more than I will be a member of the Company. I ask that you extend Your full protection to them, Mr. President. I don’t ask that you take them out of the Company, Mr. President. But protect them from the Union Leader.
Change these employees, Mr. President. They have much to learn. And they’ve only begun to use Our Benefits Package. The Manager We send, He will give them brand new tools to use — amazing tools. (smiles at employees) Yes, they are going to know true joy for the first time since We began to give away the Company Stock.
The Manager will lead them through Our Policies. And they will become better employees. Sure, there’s going to be some long hours of overtime, but they are going to do an incredible work, these Our beloved employees. And You know, Sir, this Resignation Speech is not only on behalf of these employees standing here, but for all the recruits they will bring to us, Mr. President. These employees here, now, and those of the future — they are going to be one big family, Sir . . . just like You and Me . . . A FAMILY.
I bequeath to Our Employees all the Benefits You have given to me. And with the help of the Manager, they can and will be one, like US. (gestures to employees) Then . . . in me. Me . . . in You. You . . . in them. WE . . . are ONE. Let them come together in complete unity, so that Our love can be complete.
And Mr. President. I want all these faithful employees to be with Us. I want to bring them all to Company Headquarters, to see me in all my Benefits — all the Benefits You gave me, even before the free distribution of the Company Stock.
Sir? You are a Clean President. It is so good to have a truly Clean, and Righteous President. And even though the Company does not truly know You, and does not want to know You . . . I know you. And through me, Our employees know you.
I have taught them about You. The Manager, on my behalf, will continue to make You known to them. (smiles at employees) In this way, the great love You have for me will be in them. And I, myself, will be . . . in them.
Mr. President? Please accept my resignation. (listens) Thank You Sir.
(nods) Good-bye, Father. (hangs up phone)
(VP closes briefcase, and walks to employees, places the briefcase in the Foreman's hands)
This is for you. Share it. Keep it. Know it.
(turns and begins to exit — the employees stand up)
(VP turns) And remember, I will never really leave you. I will always be with you. (exits)
(employees stand looking at each other, and then they slowly disassemble, each retreating in different directions)
