UNRESOLVED DRAMA -- It will be up to the sermon, or a talk afterward, to weigh the different meanings, and if it is indeed POSSIBLE to stop sinning.
(HUSBAND and WIFE approach front through center aisle, and they are speaking very softly at first, but as they get closer and closer to front, their conversation becomes more heated, angrier, until they are literally shouting at each other)
HUSBAND:
(whispering) Listen — don’t talk to me about it, because this just isn’t the time or place. I don’t WANT to talk about it.
WIFE:
Sweetheart, I’m your wife — you HAVE to talk to me. We have to work this out…
HUSBAND:
(louder) DON’T even bring up our marriage. You want me to throw up?
WIFE:
(embarrassed, angry) Keep your voice down! We’re surrounded by people! This is still a church, you know!
HUSBAND:
(even louder, close to yelling) I’m not keeping my voice down! You don’t think they know? They KNOW! Everyone knows.
(he pulls away from her and she catches onto his arm and they continue toward the front)
WIFE:
Okay okay okay okay! But I love you! Forgive me. Please. Jesus said you should forgive me!
HUSBAND:
(intensely angry, shaking) DON’T even bring up all that religious stuff! Like it’s gotten you anywhere! Like it’s gotten US anywhere. And if I remember right — and you know I always do — Jesus said that what you’ve done is grounds for divorce.
WIFE:
Don’t talk like that. I’m trying. Really I am. I try so hard.
HUSBAND:
Look I’ve had about enough of you and your excuses. You did this AFTER your “religious spell” — Jesus didn’t seem to help you at all. Now I’ve been MORE than fair with you. I could have left you four years ago. But I stayed with you, for the children.
WIFE:
(weeping) Forgive me. I’m really trying hard. I don’t know why I can’t win this thing, why I keep sinning. But I know we can make it.
HUSBAND:
(livid with rage) THAT’S ENOUGH. I don’t want to hear another word from you. I don’t believe you. You’re a liar. (pulls away, storms back up the aisle)
WIFE:
(staring after him in tears) Please come back! Don’t leave me! I love you!
(looking up to God) I love him, God, and I love You. But WHY can’t I stop sinning? Why haven’t I changed?
(moving up the aisle after HUSBAND) Please come back! Forgive me! Please give me one more chance . . . I’ll try harder! I’ll try HARDER!
