(Jesus and 12 disciples enter and approach supper table)
Celebrating the Passover (Luke 22:14-16)
(all recline at low-slung table table, seated upon cushions so that the table top is at elbow level)
JESUS:
I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the Kingdom of God.
(around table DISCIPLES begin to discuss — escalating into argument — “WHO IS THE GREATEST?”)
The Ordinance of Footwashing (John 13:1-20)
(Jesus rises, removes outer clothing, wraps towel around waist, pours water into basin, and begins washing DISCIPLE’s feet, drying with the towel at His waist)
Peter watches with growing disdain, begins to reprimand the others, especially Judas who should have had the money to hire a servant to do the footwashing.
PETER:
Lord, are you going to wash my feet?
JESUS:
You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.
PETER:
No, you shall never wash my feet.
JESUS:
Unless I wash you, you have no part of me.
PETER:
Then, Lord, not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!
JESUS:
A person who has a bath needs only to wash his feet; his whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you. (returns to place, puts on cloak)
Do you understand what I have done for you? You call Me Teacher and Lord, and rightly so, for that is what I am.
Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
<< BREAK FOR CONGREGATIONAL FOOTWASHING >>
The Lord’s Supper (Matthew 26:26-29)
JESUS:
(blesses bread, and breaks) Take and eat; this is My Body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of Me.
(take cup) Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
I tell you, I will not drink of the fruit of this vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s Kingdom.
<< COMMUNION FOR CONGREGATION >>
The Betrayal by Judas (John 13:18-30)
JESUS:
(troubled in spirit) I tell you the truth, one of you is going to betray Me.
DISCIPLES:
(stare at one another, confused, growing upset, they begin to ask…)
“Not I, Lord?” “Surely not I, Lord?” “Not me, Lord, please not me!” “Never, Lord, not me!” “Is it I, Lord?”
PETER:
(to John) Ask Him which one He means.
JOHN:
(leaning back against Jesus) Lord, who is it?
JESUS:
It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish. (Jesus gives bread to Judas) What you are about to do, do quickly. (Judas takes bread and immediately leaves)
Parting Counsel (John 13:31 – 14:31)
JESUS:
Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in Him.
If God is glorified in Him, God will glorify the Son in Himself, and will glorify Him at once.
My children, I will be with you only a little longer. You will look for Me, and just as I told the Jews, so I tell you now: where I am going you cannot come.
A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.
PETER:
Lord, where are You going?
JESUS:
Where I am going, you cannot follow now, but you will follow later.
PETER:
Lord, why can’t I follow You now? I will lay down my life for you.
JESUS:
Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows you will disown me three times.
(to all) Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in Me. In my Father’s House are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.
I am going there to prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me, that you may also be where I am.
